On Friday June 15, 2018, prof. Ulrich Schmid (Wuppertal-Bethel, INTF Münster) gave the first Tjitze Baarda Memorial Lecture at the Vrije Universiteit.

With some 15 members of the Baarda family present Schmid spoke about modern reconstructions of Marcion’s gospel. Marcion of Sinope was cast out of the church of Rome in 144, because of his theological convictions. According to a number of early Christian authors he considered “a condensed version of the gospel” authoritative, as he did with an abbreviated version of the letters of Paul. Which gospel? And how does this gospel relate to the canonical gospels as we know them (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John)? According to Schmid modern reconstructions that intend to predate Marcion’s gospel to e.g. Luke fail by lack of evidence. With a big data analysis of a number of manuscripts Schmid claimed to have falsified any theory that claims the priority of Marcion’s gospel over e.g. Luke. Schmid’s lecture was followed by a lively discussion.
Before Schmid’s lecture dr. Sijbolt Noorda (a.o. previously chairman Executive Board UvA, chairman VSNU) had given a personal and academic in memoriam of Baarda. Between the two presentations, the VU Chamber Choir sang parts of their 50th-anniversary programme. After the event news broke that the Tjitze Baarda Memorial Lecture 2019 will be given by VU-alumna prof. AnneMarie Luijendijk (Princeton University).
